Software Developer

About the role...

As a Software Developer at Poundland & Dealz, you will join our in-house development team, reporting to the Software Development Team Leader and working closely with experienced engineers and business stakeholders.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll design, build, and maintain business-critical systems that support our stores across the UK & Ireland. You’ll play a key part in developing robust, scalable software solutions while following established development standards and best practices.

Alongside project work, you’ll provide ongoing support and enhancements for internally developed applications, working collaboratively with end users to understand requirements and deliver effective technical solutions.

You’ll be encouraged to build strong working relationships across the business, enabling you to gather requirements clearly, contribute ideas and help shape solutions that meet evolving commercial needs.

What You’ll Be Working On

The primary focus of this role is our EPOS (till) platform, used across all Poundland & Dealz stores in the UK & Ireland.

This is a mission-critical system that has been in place for over 25 years and is now being rewritten from the ground up. You’ll be part of the team delivering the next-generation till software — helping to modernise, improve and future-proof a core retail system.

Following the initial rebuild, you’ll continue to enhance and maintain the platform, responding to new business initiatives and regulatory requirements.

This role offers the opportunity to work on a high-impact system that directly supports store operations and customer experience.

Tech Stack (Day-to-Day)

  • Microsoft Visual Studio
  • C# / .NET
  • SQL Server (T-SQL, stored procedures, views)
  • REST APIs
  • JSON and CSV data handling
  • Git / Azure DevOps

Desirable experience includes:

  • EPOS or retail systems
  • File transfer management (e.g., SFTP)
  • ETL processes

Location

This position is based at our Head Office in Walsall, five days per week, with occasional opportunities to work from home.

Your Impact and Responsibilities…

  • Ensure software is delivered in line with the business requirements defined by the Product Owners.
  • Ensure all software meets the quality standards set by the Software Development Team Leader.
  • Deliver software within agreed timescales and deadlines.
  • Manage assigned support requests, ensuring they are resolved satisfactorily and within agreed SLAs.
  • Act in accordance with Poundland’s values at all times.

Skills and Knowledge…

Essential

  • A minimum of 5 years’ commercial experience in System Development
  • Highly competent using Microsoft Visual Studio tools – especially C# applications
  • Test driven development methods

Desirable

  • Experience of EPoS solutions
  • Borland Delphi (Version 5 onwards)
  • Other SQL databases – Experience of MySQL & Oracle first and demonstrating the Poundland values
  • Understanding & experience of File Transfer management such as SFTP, JSON, CSV etc.
  • Writing SSIS packages for ETL activities
