About the role...

As a Software Developer at Poundland & Dealz, you will report into the Software Development Team Leader and work closely with existing colleagues.

Your role will involve developing and maintaining applications and software to meet business needs, in line with established standards and best practices. You will also provide support for internally developed systems, collaborating with end users where appropriate.

You will be expected to build strong working relationships with key business stakeholders, enabling you to fully understand their requirements and effectively gather the information needed to deliver or progress work requests.

This position will be based at our Head Office in Walsall, with occasional opportunities to work from home.

Your Impact and Responsibilities…

  • Ensure software is delivered in line with the business requirements defined by the Product Owners.
  • Ensure all software meets the quality standards set by the Software Development Team Leader.
  • Deliver software within agreed timescales and deadlines.
  • Manage assigned support requests, ensuring they are resolved satisfactorily and within agreed SLAs.
  • Act in accordance with Poundland’s values at all times.

Skills and Knowledge…

Essential

  • A minimum of 5 years’ commercial experience in systems or software development.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Visual Studio, particularly developing applications in C# and .NET using WinForms, WPF, or similar frameworks.
  • Solid experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including stored procedures, functions, views, and SQL scripting.
  • Experience using team collaboration and source control tools such as TFS, Git, or Azure DevOps.
  • Knowledge and practical application of test-driven development methodologies.
  • Ability to produce high-quality technical and software documentation.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • An analytical approach to understanding requirements and delivering effective solutions.
  • Experience working closely with business stakeholders in a fast-paced or pressured environment.
  • A proactive mindset with a desire to improve and enhance existing processes.
  • A positive, customer-focused attitude that reflects and supports Poundland values.

Desirable

  • Experience developing or supporting EPoS solutions.
  • Mobile application development experience, particularly using .NET MAUI.
  • Web development experience using .NET Core.
  • Experience with Borland Delphi (version 5 onwards).
  • Exposure to other database technologies such as MySQL or Oracle.
  • Understanding of file transfer and data exchange formats and methods, including SFTP, JSON, and CSV.
  • Experience designing and writing SSIS packages for ETL processes.
